long nights and stormy flights

hello everyone! i’m very tired!

it was a lengthy journey, but i’m settled at last (for the time being) in the town of kavos. this consisted of three (3) flights, two (2) trains, one (1) van, and altogether over 28 hours of consciousness before i could get to sleep.i did, however, wake up to this view:

which was well worth it.our plane was waved into corfu by a rather ominous looking storm, and we were met with another in the late morning, and again in the early evening. it looks as though they won’t be letting up for long, with the exception of this saturday–fingers crossed, of course.

attached is video evidence of said storms. i would also like to call to the stand all of my sopping wet clothing from trying to run back through town to the hotel.

i did get a chance today, between raindrops, to go for a good hike.

the centre of kavos is a spectacularly odd mix of classical mediterranean architecture and dozens upon dozens of bars which had just closed for the season. it gives off a feeling as if you were investigating a significant number of disappearances–modern archaeology, maybe. CSI kavos. (spoiler alert: according to the waiter at dinner tonight, they’ve just packed up shop and moved to the next town north, which has far more year-round tourism)

i think you all have read enough of my thoughts about the sea, but this is also the first time i’ve seen the mediterranean, so take that excitement and add 50. standing on the shoreline, it was easy to imagine the phaeacians setting sail to trade or make war from these shores. i can picture so clearly odysseus washing up onto the beach again, and i hurl him back into the sea but with a proper map this time.

the hike brought me along through the forest to the southernmost point on the island, and the ruins of an old monastery atop a great cliff:

the precipice was overwhelmingly high but the view to paxi, the island just south, was exceptional.

long hike back, then a nice dinner and a very drenched dash home–and to bed at last!
